There is nothing that makes the Murray family and staff sadder than a distraught gardener who has just lost plants that were planted prior to the last frost. A warm day or two and everyone is flocking to anywhere plants are being sold. This often results in poor luck and wasted money.
Frost free date is often 3-4 days after the full moon closest to May 30th ( meaning before OR after) clear starlit nights near the full moon will provide radiational cooling that will often result in a frost.
Rainy windy nights near the full moon are a benefit as it will not freeze so easily with the cloud cover. Watch the weather, clouds are good, clear is bad.
Late April and early May is a good time to purchase Pansies, perennials, and of course Murray Farm magical planting soil” for your planters and even in your planting beds.
Early May to Mothers Day is a great time to purchase hanging baskets and planters and to enjoy browsing in the greenhouse. Limit your purchases to only what you can move inside in the event of frost, but can move outside every day for sunshine.
Mother’s day thru Memorial Day is when lots of plants are purchased at Murray’s, you must keep them outdoors full time and bring them in only if a frost is possible.
Many people plant window boxes and planters at this point and some plant in the ground with the intent of covering if a frost is possible. Vegetable seedlings are commonly purchased near the 3rd weekend of May.
Memorial Day thru June This is a great time to finish your gardening purchases and planting for the spring, simply purchase and plant right away.
