From 1964 thru 1976 Murray Farms took top soil from our farm and combined it with peat moss, a bit of sand, maybe vermiculite, or perlite depending on our recipe for the given crop. After carefully blending it in the cement mixed it was sterilized on our custom designed “dirt cooker” It is remembered by many filling pots and packs with soil that was way too hot to be touched with the bare hands we transported it in steel trash cans, fill a trash can with soil and lift it up someday to see what us kids endured.
Then along came “Artificial Soil” in a bag, later to be called “Soil less mix” and now called “Growing Media” The ” dirt” hasn’t changed a bit but the name has. Our greenhouse supplier begged us to try just a “bit” in 1975, we have never looked back. We now offer this commercial growing media to our customers, sometimes we even PUSH it on our customers, why? Because it works with consistently amazing results, use it straight from the bag in planters, use a few generous handfuls in the planting hole when transplanting seedlings. It comes with a very high dose of time release fertilizer that feeds over 6 months. due to this fact it can not be kept from year to year and all must be used 30 days from purchase. Ask for it by name it is “metro mix with time release”, otherwise know as “Murray’s wicked good dirt” the formulation is tailored for Murray Farm and only available at our greenhouse during the spring season. Murray Farm also offers a blend without the time release, also offered is Coast of Maine organic soil amendments, and other alternative soils. The most important gardening tip “not all soils are created equal” nor are their results!
